GSU-USC Commutative Algebra Seminar
Columbia, SC
November 2-4, 2007



  The seminar represents a collaborative effort of commutative algebraists at Georgia State University and University of South Carolina to increase exposure of their research area in the South-East through periodic meetings.

  There will be one meeting in Atlanta and one meeting in Columbia each semester.

Tentative Schedule

There will be a Colloquim on Friday, November 2 starting at 3:30. The Colloquim speaker will be Mel Hochster.

Title: Continuous closure
Abstract: Consider the polynomial functions in n complex variables. Suppose that one has several such polynomials f and f_1, ..., f_m. The talk will address the question, when can f be written as g_1 f_1 + ... + g_m f_m , where the functions g_i are only assumed to be continuous? There is an answer to this question conjectured by Holger Brenner, which, a bit surprisingly, gives a purely algebraic characterization. The talk, which is intended for a general audience, will describe what is known about this problem. The work described is joint with Neil Epstein.

The seminar talks will take place on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday November 4. There will be informal mathematical discussion on each afternoon after the talks.

10:00 - 10:55 am: Mel Hochster, University of Michigan; Title: Quasilength, a real-valued content for local cohomology modules, and the obstruction to the existence of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras (joint work with Craig Huneke)

11:05 - 11:55 am: Jinjia Li, Syracuse University; Title: Asymptotic vanishing conditions which force regularity in local rings of prime characteristic (joint with Ian Aberbach)
