Syllabus — Math 170, Finite Mathematics

Prerequisite: placement test or a C in Math 111 or 115
Textbook: (required) Finite Mathematics, 4th or 5th Ed. by Waner, Costenoble.
Graphing calculator is required. TI-83 or TI-84 are allowed. TI-89 is not. Ask the instructor regarding other models.
Learning outcomes:
- Students understand matrix and probability, and know of thair uses in the real world.
- Students get accustomed waking up before 9am on weekdays.
Attendance: If you miss more than 5 classes, whether excused or unexcused, your letter grade may be affected (university policy). Missing more than 10 classes will result in an 'F' grade.
Homework is assigned daily. Though it is not collected, I trust that you do your homework and then check with the answer key in the back of the textbook. Skipping homework will harm your quiz/test scores.
Quiz will be given about weekly. Quiz problems will be similar to homework problems. No make-up quiz is given, so please get to class on time. Two quizzes will be dropped to accommodate oversleeping, bad traffic, minor sickness, etc. Additional accommodations may be given only for documented major illness/emergencies.
There will be three in-class midterms tentatively on Mon 9/20, Wed 10/20, and Mon 11/22. The final exam is on Mon 12/6, 9 am - noon in the regular classroom. No make-up tests except for important emergencies accompanied by an official verification. Students whose schedule conflicts with a test/exam should let me know well in advance to work out an alternative.

Letter grades will more or less follow the standard 90-80-70-60 cutoffs for A-B-C-D, with "+" for scores near the cutoffs.
