Class notes and assignments for August and September

Make sure you are eligible for this course! You should have either made a grade of A41 on the math placement test, or made a grade of C or better in Math 122 or 115, or made a sufficient score on a precalculus AP or CLEP test, or received special permission from the Department of Mathematics.

Week of August 22 - 26

The problems listed below for graphing calculators are also appropriate for practice with Maple and the FunctionPlotter Maplet, whether or not you have a graphing calculator.

Practice problems: look at these before Thursday, Aug. 25 recitation section:
Section 1.1: problems 1, 3, 9, 19, and 27 abc; if you have a graphing calculator, try 27d as well.
Section 1.2: [for those with graphing calculators]: problems 1, 5, and 7.
Section 1.3: odd-numbered problems 31 through 39, and 45, 47.
Section 1.6: problems 9, 11, 13, 17, 23, 27, 31.

If you haven't already done so, try working odd-numbered problems 9 through 15 in Section 1.2, using either a graphing calculator or Maple or the FunctionPlotter Maplet. I recommend using Maple since this will give you practice that will come in handy during the Tuesday computer labs.

Hand in Friday, Aug. 26:

Try working these problems before Monday's class, Aug. 29:
Section 1.8: 1, 3, 5.

Look over Appendix A and Section 2.1 before Monday's class. Appendix A is a review of trigonometry, and Section 2.1 introduces the fundamental calculus concept, the concept of a limit. You cannot understand calculus without a good idea of what limits are all about.
