Prerequisite: Qualification through placement, or a grade of C or better in Math 111 or 115.
Text: A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers by Billstein, Libeskind, and Lott, 8th ed.
Attendance: You are expected to come to every class on time and stay until the end of class.
Cell phone policy: Turn off during class.

Work Load: There will be daily reading and homework, regular correspondence with an elementary school child, 9 quizzes, 2 tests, and 1 cumulative final exam.

Pen pal journals: Each of you will have one or two pen pals at a local elementary school. Over the course of the semester you will correspond with them once every 1-2 weeks using a pen pal journal.

Grading:
 
Attendance 10 points (2 points deducted for each missed day)
Pen pal journals 60 points (based on participation, creativity, and adherence to NCTM standards)
Quizzes: 80 points (Eight best of nine 10-point quizzes, based on homework assignments)
Test 1: 100 points (Tuesday, Feb 15)
Test 2: 100 points (Thursday, Apr 14)
Cumulative Final Exam: 150 points (Friday, Apr 29, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM, LeConte 405)
TOTAL: 500 points

Note: There are no make-ups for journals, quizzes, or tests.

A [450, 500]      (i.e. 90% needed for an A)
B+ [425, 450)      (i.e. 85% needed for a B+)
B [400, 425)      (i.e. 80% needed for a B)
C+ [375, 400)      (i.e. 75% needed for a C+)
C [350, 375)      (i.e. 70% needed for a C)

Math Lab Tutoring: Free tutoring is provided by the Math Lab. Its schedule is 11am-4pm MTWTh in LeConte 101, and 6-8pm MTWTh in the Bates and Tower area dorms.
