DAILY ASSIGNMENTS
Week 1 (Monday - classes begin, Friday - last day to drop without a grade of W)
Jan 11 (Tu) Read sections 1.1 - 1.3. Do Student Activity 1 and Student Activity 2 from the handout.
Jan 13 (Th) Do #2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 14 from section 1.1. Do #3, 12, 21, 23 from section 1.2. Decorate your Pen pal folders using a math motif. Be sure to leave room to write the elementary school teacher's name in the lower right corner. You should write your name and leave space for your future pen pal's name somewhere on the front of the folder. We will have a quiz one week from today covering 1.1, 1.2, and the Activity 1 - 2 handout.
Week 2 (Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day)
Jan 18 (Tu) Read 1.3 and 2.1. Do #5, 9, 10, 13, 15 from section 1.3. Thursday's quiz will cover sections 1.1, 1.2, and the Activity 1 - 2 handout.
Jan 20 (Th) Read sections 2.1 and 2.2. In 2.1 do #2, 7, 15. In 2.2 do #4, 9, 10. Quiz 1 was given in class today.
Week 3
Jan 25 (Tu) Read section 2.3.
Jan 27 (Th) Quiz 2 is postponed until Tuesday and will cover sections 2.1-2.2. Read section 2.4.
Week 4
Feb 1 (Tu) Read section 3.1. Thursday's quiz will be a take-home quiz.
Feb 3 (Th) In class today, we discussed sections 2.3 and 2.4. For homework, read sections 3.1 and 3.2. For quiz 3, you should do #8, 12, 16, and 20 from section 3.1. This quiz is a take-home assignment due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Feb. 8th.
Week 5
Feb 8 (Tu) The take-home quiz can still be turned in Thursday for full credit. For homework, do #3, 5, 21 from 2.3, do #3, 5, 6, 13, 35, 36 from 2.4, do #21, 23 from 3.1, do #8, 9, 13, 15, 16 from 3.2. Next Tuesday's test will cover sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2. I will have a help session Sunday night from 6:00-8:00pm.
Feb 10 (Th) You may pick up your graded quiz either Friday or Monday from 1-3:00pm in my office (LC400H). The help session has been moved so that it will now be on Sunday from 6-8:00pm in LC405.
Week 6
Feb 15 (Tu) Test 1
Feb 17 (Th) Read sections 3.3-3.4. In 3.3 do #2, 5, 11, 14, 17, 24, 27. In 3.4 do #2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11. We will assign pen pal partners on Tuesday. If you are sick be sure to email me to obtain your student's name. Monday will be the last day to drop without a grade of WF. If you didn't do well on the first test, and you decide to stay in this course, you should spend more time on this course. You can always email me if you'd like to set up additional office hours. I will give a study guide or practice test before your 2nd test, and the final exam will replace your lowest test score. However I do not plan to alter my grading scale. You still need an overall average of 70% to receive a C in this course.
Week 7 (Monday - last day to drop without a grade of WF)
Feb 22 (Tu) We assigned pen pal partners today. You should prepare your first correspondence for your pen pal and place it in your decorated folder to turn in Thursday. You should read the document Pen Pal Pointers to get an idea of what is expected for this assignment.
Feb 24 (Th) Skim sections 4.1 and 4.2. Read section 4.3 carefully. For homework do #1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11 from section 4.3. Quiz 4 was given as a take-home quiz. Try to finish it by Tuesday, but if you need extra time you can turn it in to my mailbox by Wednesday.
Week 8
Mar 1 (Tu) Have your pen pal journals ready by Thursday's class - you should correct (in a constructive way) the mistakes that your pen pal made; you should answer your pen pal's questions; you should prepare new questions for your pen pal. Try to make the questions fun and pertinent to the material they are learning. Read section 4.4 and do #1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 26, 27, 29 from that section. In particular, be sure that you understand the problem about bears on the bottom of page 236. You will have an in-class quiz Thursday on sections 4.3 and 4.4.

Week 9 (Spring Break!)
Week 10
Mar 15 (Tu) Pen pal folders will be passed out Thursday instead of today. For homework, read section 4.5 and do #1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 20, 29. Thursday's quiz will cover this section. Our pen pal school has set aside this Friday for a day of math fun and games from 8:00AM to 2:00PM. Principal Wyatt has invited anyone from our class to either observe or volunteer. To learn more, go to the Caughman Road Elementary School website and select the link for Math Mountain.
Mar 17 (Th) Quiz 6 was given in class. For homework, read section 4.6 and do #2, 8, 9 from that section. Also look more carefully over your pen pal folders before turning them in on Tuesday. Roughly half of you made your own mathematical mistakes in your own questions or your answers to the child's questions. In particular, be sure that you use the correct units for length, area, volume, etc. Also be sure that whatever shape you or your pen pal draw could possibly exist with the dimensions given. Understand the difference between area, surface area, volume, etc. You should answer your pen pal's questions. You should correct any current or past mistakes (yours and your pen pals). If you missed class, you can pick up your folder outside my office (LeConte 400H).
Week 11
Mar 22 (Tu) You will have quiz Thursday on section 4.6. Read section 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3. For homework do #2, 3, 12 from 5.1, #1, 2, 3, 13, 15 from 5.2, and 3, 8, 12, 16, 18, 26 from 5.3.
Mar 24 (Th) Quiz 7. For homework, read sections 6.1-6.2.
Week 12
Mar 29 (Tu) For homework, do #1-6 from 6.1 and #6, 11, 12, 17 from 6.2. Thursday's quiz will cover sections 5.1-5.3 on fractions and 6.1-6.2 on decimals. No calculators will be allowed and the questions will be similar to the homework from these sections.
Mar 31 (Th) Quiz 8 was given in class. For homework, read section 6.4 and do as many of the problems from #1-30 that are necessary for you to feel comfortable working with percents.
Week 13
Apr 5 (Tu) Read 6.3 and do #1, 2, 7, 8 from that section. Thursday's quiz will cover 6.3 - 6.4. There will a test one week from Thursday with a help session the night before from 7:00PM - 9:00PM.
Apr 7 (Th) Quiz 9 today was given as a take-home quiz due Tuesday. Your pen pal folders are also due Tuesday. If you must miss class, be sure to have someone turn both of these in for you by Tuesday. For homework read section 6.6 and do #2, 4, 12, 18, 19 from that section.
Week 14
Apr 12 (Tu) See the review sheet for Thursday's test. Note that it will cover sections 3.3, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4. If your computer can't view the review sheet, I'll put a few extra copies outside my office in the box labeled Pen Pal Folders. There is a help session tomorrow night from 7:00PM - 9:00PM in our regular classroom.
Apr 14 (Th) Test 2
Week 15
Apr 19 (Tu) For Thursday, return your pen-pal journal for me to grade, and write a card or letter for me to give to your pen-pal. You do not need to write any more in the pen-pal journal. Quiz 10 (due Thursday) is optional and will be used if you want to drop 2 low quiz grades instead of 1 low quiz grade. Quiz 10 covers section 6.6 and 2.5. Some practice problems from 2.5 are #9, 21, 22.
Apr 21 (Th) Review. Help session next Thursday from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
Week 16 (Monday - last day of classes)
Final Exam Period (Wednesday, Apr 27 through Wednesday, May 4)
Apr 28 (Th) Help session tonight from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Apr 29 (Friday) Cumulative Final Exam from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM in LC 405
