Feb 4-6: Systems (cont.), linear transformations, eigenvectors

This week

  • Read E-K pp 224-229; figures 6.7 and 6.8 are especially important. Begin reading the handout on vectors
  • Work on all the exercises in the vector handout, including a second look at intro.mws.
  • Read about tumor growth E-K pp 217-218
  • Work on E-K page 257 problems 7, 8, 9a, 13, 30a
  • Join up with one or two of your classmates to form a project group; scan the papers and select the one you want to work on
  • For next week

  • Make a preliminary walk-through of the Maple worksheet eigen.mws
  • Read E-K pp 128-130 and 171-186. You can skip the technical stuff in the boxes; the main thing is to understand what direction fields and nullclines are all about, how eigenvalues determine what solution curves must look like in the vicinity of steady states of linear systems, and finally what the process of linearization accomplishes
  • To be collected Wed (Feb 12) problems 5, 6 of the vector handout
