Meeting time and Location: MWF 09:05-09:55AM in Currel College 204
Text: Applied Calculus. Hughes-Hallet, Gleason, Lock, Flath, et al., Wiley, 3rd ED., 2006
Prerequisites: Qualification through placement or a grade of C or better in Math 111 or 115.
Student learning
outcomes: We will review linear, exponential, logarithmic, and elementary
algebraic functions at beginning and also review some algebraic operations on
functions. Basically, these are what you have learned in high school or in
Math111. After the first test, students will learn the concepts of
differentiation and integration in order to analyze the behaviors of above
functions and obtain some information from these functions such as maxima,
minima, rate of change, area under the graph of a function. Furthermore,
students will learn how to model and solve real world problems (economics,
business, physics, and biology, etc.) by using mathematical tools.
Calculator: You need a graphing calculator. TI-83 or TI-84 is strongly recommended. A calculator with a computer algebra system, like TI-89, is NOT allowed.
Grading policy:
|
1. Quizzes (9 ~ 10 times) 2. Each test (3 times) 3. Final Exam *(Optional) Total Letter grades will be given according to the following scale:
|
100 100 100* 500 |
*Final exam is accumulated. **Students
who get at more than 90% of every test can exempt the final exam. |
I preserve the right to change the grading policy.
Attendance and Make-up
test policy: I will take attendance
every class. Absences in more than 10 percent of the classes can affect the
final grade. Even if you have a formal certificate to explain your absences,
you have to inform me in one week. If you have missed more than three classes
without any reasons, then I am not going to give you make-up tests or quizzes.
Homework policy: Homework
will be assigned, but won¡¦t be collected in genreal. I
will only collect some class assignments.
Academic Honesty:
Any student caught cheating in quizzes, tests, or final exams will receive an F
for the course. I will refer the case to the Office of Academic Integrity.
