TA:

First of all, this is an online course and very little instructor and TA interaction is required.    As long as you keep a C or better in the class, you will not be required to attend any classes except for the proctored test dates listed later in this syllabus.  You may, of course, come to class during normally scheduled times below for assistance and you may send questions to the course email address.  This email account will be monitored on most evenings by either the instructor or the TA.   The only exceptions to the class meeting dates are the Week of Labor Day (class will meet on Wednesday instead of Monday) and the week of the Election Day (class will meet on Thursday instead of Tuesday) when the university is closed on our scheduled days.  You will find the detailed class calendar later in this syllabus.

In the past, students generally either loved taking a math class online or absolutely hated taking a math class in this manner.  You are free to work at your own pace in this class; it is possible for you take the entire course in six weeks if you work at completing early.  Any homeworks and quizzes may be turned in early.  With one weeks notice, any test, including the final can be taken early during your normal scheduled class time.

If you do not like working with computers this may not be the class for you.

You have several options for obtaining help in this class:

1.       Someone will be available to help you during your normal scheduled class times in LC 102, this is optional for students with a grade of C or better.

2.       There is extensive help within the course.

a.      There are videos that you can watch to help you with many of the concepts.

b.      There are guided examples that lead you step by step through the process of each question type.

c.      There is a Study Plan system which evaluates your abilities and guides you to the areas where you need further study.

d.      There is a video series in the software to help you if you suffer from math anxiety which can be found under >>chapter contents>>Tools for success>>.

3.       Second, there are instructors that the publisher provides to give you assistance in your course work.  The Prentice Hall's Math Tutor Center is staffed by college-level mathematics instructors who can help you with what you are learning.

As a MyMathLab student, you can register for the Tutor Center free of charge:

·         Call 1-800-435-4084 (5:00 PM-12:00 AM EST, Sun-Thurs).

·         When asked for a registration number, simply provide your MyMathLab course ID or student access code.   The MyMathLab course ID is listed in ton page 1 of this syllabus and your student access code came with your book.

4.       Local Help is also available.  You may also wish to use the university Math Lab's free tutoring service.   Please check http://www.math.sc.edu/mathlab.html for locations, hours, holiday schedules and tutor schedules.

5.       The Department of Mathematics also keeps a list of for fee tutors if you feel that you need more individual attention.  You can access the departments tutor lists at http://www.math.sc.edu/mathlab/private/.  It is your responsibility to negotiate times and charges for this type of tutoring service.

Use all available outside resources, i.e. math lab, study groups, etc so that you understand the material and have a successful experience with this class.

Grading Information

All of your work for this class will be done on a computer.  For those students who do not have their own computers, you may work in the lab in LC102, when a class is not being held.  Please be aware that the computer labs in the LeConte College are only open from approximately 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.  Other computer labs on campus have yet to be convinced to allow us to install the software to run your course in their labs.

All homework’s, quizzes and tests are taken on a computer and the computer does the grading.  On the major tests, we will manually look over your work before a final grade is assigned for the test.  The system is supposed to be now automatically giving partial credit on multipart questions and this should eliminate many of the problems we had in the past with the automated grading system.

Homework:   All Homework is generally assigned on the first day of the semester.  The homework due dates are spread throughout the semester and are designed to keep you on tract to finish the course by the end of the semester.  Homework is generally due on Sunday night at midnight (actually 11:59).  You can continue working on the homework assignment until all homework is correct or the due date has passed.   This means that you can continue working on a problem until you can find some help or figure it out yourself until to the due date.  So, it is generally a good idea to start your homework early so that you have time to focus on those problems which cause you the most difficulty.  All of the Homework together is worth 20% of your grade.  A complete list of Homework assignments in located in table following the syllabus.  Please be aware that if for some reason an extension is given to one student, the system with change the due date for all students.  So remember that homework is due on the assigned date and extensions are only given with reasonable justification.

Non-Proctored Online Quizzes:  There a six non-proctored online quizzes.  You are allowed an unlimited number of attempts until the due date on each quiz and your best score will be taken.  Each non-proctored online quiz is worth 5% of your grade or the 6 Non-proctored online quizzes are 30% of your total grade.

Proctored Tests:  Three proctored tests will be given during the semester.  The date and time of your tests depends on the course time and section number for your class.  You are required to take each exam on the date and time given below for your section unless you have made arrangements to take the test prior to the actual test date on a normally schedule class day.

Please note that NO extra credit work will be assigned. You grade will be based solely on you homework, quizzes, tests, and final.  You may check your numeric grade at any time during the semester by checking the gradebook in the left frame of your course home page.  You do have an unlimited number of practice problems to use to improve your grades on tests and quizzes.  Your grade in this class is left entire up to you and the amount of effort you put into the class.
