Math 142
Source of Help
Prof. Girardi's suggestions

  1. Form a Calculus Jam Session, where students from our class meet on a regular basis and work through problems. Let me know and I will help you organize it. The Math Tutor Lab (LC 105) and the math undergraduate student lounge (LC 311) are good places to hold your meetings: they have chalkboards, large tables, and lots of chairs.
  2. Attend the SI Sessions! The times and location are posted on our class Schedule.
USC's Supplemental Instruction Program has had tremendous success in increasing the course material understanding and raising the grades of students who actively take advantage of its offerings. Our SI Leader attends our Main Lectures and also holds study sessions 3 nights a week to answer your questions on the Main Lecture, to give hints on homework, and to work additional problems. So come to as many of these highly recommended SI classes as you can, ready with your questions for the SI Leader.
  3. The Math Tutor Lab and ACE Math Tutoring offer free tutoring to USC students. Check out their (above linked) homepages for more information!
    • There are several locations and many hours. No appointment is necessary - just stop by.
    • It is staffed with talented undergraduate and graduate students eager to answer your questions about your 100-level math courses. Its homepage posts the schedule of the tutors ... so if you find a tutor that you like, you can check out their schedule to see when they are there.
    • They also maintain a list of private tutors (who tutor for a fee) for math and statistics.
  4. There are many calculus textbooks, several with student manuals, available in the locations listed below. These books are excellent sources for worked out problems for further practice.
    • In the Math Library (3rd floor LeConte, Greene St. end). Just ask the librarian to point you to the extra textbook self. The Math Library hours are listed on our class Schedule.
    • In the Ernest and Meguerite Hedberg Student Lounge (LC 311). This undergraduate lounge is a good place for you to hold study groups with other students - there is a long table and a chalk board.
  5. The Professor and Teaching Assistant are available to help. See the course syllabus and schedule (findable from the course homepage) for further details (such as office hours).
