Course information

  • The course textbook is Elementary Number Theory and its Applications, by Kenneth H. Rosen, 4th ed., Addison Wesley Longman, 2000.

  • Office hours: 9-10 am Tuesday, 3-4 pm Wednesday, 10-11 am Friday, and by appointment.

  • Exam schedule: There will be 3 in-class hour exams and 1 final exam. All exams will be held in class, room 341, Altgeld Hall.
    Exam 1: Wednesday, February 16.
    Exam 2: Wednesday, March 16.
    Exam 3: Wednesday, April 20.
    Final Exam: Monday, May 9, 8-11 am.

  • 1/24-1/28: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.

  • Exam I: Wednesday, February 16.
    Material covered: Textbook sections 1.4, 3.1-3.4, 3.6, 4.1, class notes 1/18-2/11, and homeworks 1-3. Homework 3 will be graded and solutions available on Tuesday, 2/15.

  • 2/21-2/25: 4.4, 6.1, 6.2.

  • 2/28-3/4: 6.3, 7.1, 7.2.

  • 3/7-3/11: 7.4, Fermat's Last Theorem is almost always true (handout).

  • 3/14-3/18: 9.1, 9.2

  • Exam II: Wednesday, March 16.
    Material covered: Textbook sections 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 6.1, 6.3, 7.1, 7.2, 7.4, class notes 2/14-3/4, homeworks 4-7. Homework 7 will be graded and solutions available on Tuesday, 3/15.

  • 3/28-4/1: 9.2, 9.3.

  • 4/4-4/8: 11.1, 11.2.

  • 4/11-4/15: 11.2, 11.3.

  • 4/18-4/22: 13.1.

  • Exam III: Wednesday, April 20.
    Material covered: Textbook sections 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 11.1, and 11.2., class notes 3/14-4/15, homeworks 8-10. Homework 10 will be graded and solutions available on Tuesday, April 19.

  • 4/25-4/29: 13.2, 13.3.

  • 5/2, 5/4:

  • Final Exam: Monday, May 9, 8-11 am, 341 Altgeld Hall. The exam is comprehensive. It will cover all sections listed above and consist of ~ 12 problems.
