Overview of Advisement
The goal of advising is to help the students to develop suitable plans
for the completion of their degree program. The ultimate responsibility for
making decisions about career goals and educational plans rests with the
student. It is the responsibility of the student to understand and complete
the requirements for the degree. The student, in consultation of the
advisor, will construct a program that meets all departmental, collegiate
and University requirements. The role of the advisor is to assist the student
in planning, and to monitor the student's progress.
The advisor's written approval is a prerequisite for registration. It is
very important that the student gets advised during the formal advisement
period, and he or she comes prepared for advisement. In particular, the
program should be planned bearing in mind the selected cognate/minor and
whether the student plans to go into the 5-year program or graduate school.
Also, the student needs to make sure that the courses planned for the
semester are indeed offered and do not conflict. The following links will
