      Senior Instructor Mary Ellen O'Leary is retiring after more than 30 years at the University. O'Leary has a reputation as an outstanding teacher, and her distinguished record of service includes a heavy involvement with teacher preparation; chairing the University Admissions Committee; leading the Thomas Cooper Society; founding the Math Tutoring Center; and organizing the statewide AP Calculus Day.

      Congratulations to Joseph (Joey) Montoya, received an Honorable Mention In USA Today's Annual College Academic Competition. Joey graduated Summa Cum Laude in May with a degrees in Mathematics and Chemical Engineering, and a minor in Music.

      The Department is proud of its University award winners this year: The Mungo Graduate Teaching Award was given to Prof. Michael Filaseta and the USC Educational Foundation Research Award in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering was given to Prof. Pencho Petrushev.       Congratulations to Tracy McCoy and Ronda Sanders as winners of this year's Two Thumbs Up Awards! Both were among the USC faculty and staff honored for making a significant difference in the experiences of students with disabilities.

      Congratulations to our 2009-2010 Award-Winning Math Majors!...

      Congratulations to Andrea Moore, USC's latest recipient of a Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship in Mathematics. Andrea, a 2009 graduate of our program, is currently enrolled in the M.T. program in USC's School of Education. This is the sixth consecutive year that a student in our program has received this honor. Seven of USC's nine Knowles Fellows have come from the Department of Mathematics.

      The list of 2010 NSF Graduate Research Fellows includes graduating seniors Joey Montoya and Bradley Setzler and 2008 graduate Christopher Poirel. Overall, USC has 10 new NSF Graduate Research Fellows and 2 Honorable Mentions. Congratulations to all involved!

      Congratulations to Hudson Harper, Jim Manning, Joey Montoya, and Luke Whiteside on their first place finish in Math Jeopardy at the Southeastern MAA Conference in Elon, NC on March 26-27, 2010.

      — Prof. Linyuan (Lincoln) Lu is the Managing Editor of a new publication, the Journal of Combinatorics. Published by the International Press of Boston with Editors-in-Chief Fan Chung and Ron Graham.

      — Congratulations to Dr. Jerry Griggs. He has been elected to a two-year term as Chair of the SIAM Activity Group in Discrete Mathematics serving until the end of 2011.

      — Announcement: The Department offers an exciting new Ph.D. track in
Applied and Computational Mathematics (ACM).

Douglas B. Meade, Michael May, C-K. Cheung, and G.E. Keough, Getting Started with Maple, John Wiley & Sons, Third Edition, 2009, ISBN 978-0-470-45554-8 (x+209 pp.).

The book should be available for purchase around March 20. It is designed to show new users how to master the various Maple interfaces, and how to recover from problems that they might encounter.
