Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals (Sixth Edition, USC variant), by James Stewart, Cengage Learning 2009. Chapters 6, 7, 8, 10, 11.

 

Prerequisites: Qualification through placement or a grade of C or better in MATH 141.

 

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course students will master concepts and solve problems based upon methods of integration, sequences and series.

 

Attendance: Regular class attendance is important. A grade penalty will be applied to any student missing five or more classes (10%) during the semester. The "10 percent rule" stated above applies to both excused and unexcused absences. Students who anticipate potential excessive absences due to participation in permissible events as described in the USC Academic Bulletins (http://bulletin.sc.edu/content.php?catoid=3&navoid=476) should receive prior approval from the instructor to potentially avoid such penalty.

 

Cell Phones and Calculators: All electronic devices, especially cell phones, must be disabled during the class. No calculators are allowed.

Supplemental Instruction: The SI Leader for this class is Justin Fox. He attends the lectures and then holds study sessions three nights a week to answer your questions on the lecture, to help you with homework, and to work additional problems.

 

Homework: A few homework problems will be assigned each class. Be sure to do these problems before the next class. Your solutions will not be collected. Quizzes will be based on homework problems.

 

Quizzes: There will be a five-minute quiz at the end of most of the lectures. Most, but not all of them, will be graded. Each quiz will be worth 20 points. There will be at least 12 graded quizzes and your best 10 scores will be chosen to constitute a quiz grade of a possible 200 points. There will be no makeup quizzes.

 

Maple Labs and Recitations: These are held by the Teaching Assistant. A total of up to 200 points will be awarded based on the participation in the recitations (up to 50 points) and the completed assignments in Maple labs (up to 150 points). Recitation score will be based on attendance and correct solutions presented during recitation (each student will be assigned a problem to present and notified one week in advance). Exams: There will be two 75-minute exams announced well in advance of their date (tentative dates Feb 16 and Apr 8). Each exam will be worth 150 points. There will be no makeup exams.

 

Final exam: There will be a final exam worth 300 points on Wednesday, May 5 at 9:00 AM. All students must take the Final Exam.

 

Grading: You have a total of 1000 possible points: 200 points for the quiz grade, 200 points for the Maple labs and recitations, 150 points for each of the two 75-minute exams, and 300 points for the Final Exam. Your final grade will be determined from these 1000 points as follows:

900-1000 (at least  90%): A

860-899   (at least  86%): B+

800-859   (at least  80%): B

760-799   (at least  76%): C+

700-759   (at least  70%): C

660-699   (at least  66%): D+

600-659   (at least  60%): D

  0  -599   (less than 60%): F
