Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals (Eight Edition), by Anton, Bivens, and Davis, 2005. Chapters 1 – 6.

 

Prerequisites: Qualification through placement or a grade of C or better in MATH 112 or 115.

The USC Math Placements Test is scheduled at 5:30 PM and will tentatively be held at LeConte 412 on the following dates: Tuesday, August 16; Thursday, August 18; Monday, August 22; and Wednesday, August 24. No appointment is necessary. You have to take Test A. Click here for details.

 

Supplemental Instructor: For Fall 2005 each lecture section of  MATH 141  will have a Supplemental Instructor (SI). An SI is an undergraduate student who has recently done well in the course who will attend the lectures and will hold regularly scheduled review sessions to help students with course-specific study skills.

 

Math Lab: The Math Lab is a free tutoring service for all 100-level math courses. No appointment is necessary. Click here for details.

 

Attendance: Regular class attendance is important. Consistent with the USC Undergraduate Bulletin a grade penalty may be applied to any student missing five or more classes (10%) during the semester. (The "10 percent rule" stated above applies to both excused and unexcused absences.)

 

Cell Phones: All cell phones must be turned off during the class.

 

Calculators: No calculators are allowed.

 

Academic Dishonesty: Cheating and plagiarism will not be allowed. (For more information refer to the Rule of Academic Responsibility and Academic Disciplinary Procedures).

Homework: The lectures for this course will concentrate only on the key issues for the material to be learned. That is why it is important to read the covered section(s) and consider all of the given examples. The homework consists of the Quick Check Exercises at the end of the section(s) and ten assigned problems for the lecture (see the table below). You are expected to work all of these problems. We may go over some, but not all, of these problems in class or recitation. Your solutions will not be collected. Quizzes will be based on homework problems.

 

Quizzes: There will be a five-minute quiz at the end of almost every lecture. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. Your best 20 scores will be chosen to constitute a quiz grade of a possible 200 points. There will be no makeup quizzes.

 

Maple Labs: Each student is required to attend a computer lab each week. There will be several assignments to be solved using a computer algebra system called Maple. A total of up to 150 points will be awarded for these assignments. See the syllabus of the Teaching Assistant for details.

 

Exams: There will be three 50-minute exams announced well in advance of their date (tentative dates Sep. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 18). Each exam will be worth 125 points. There will be no makeup exams.

 

Final exam: There will be a final exam worth 275 points on Thursday, December 8 at 2:00 PM. All students must take the Final Exam.

 

Grading: You have a total of 1000 possible points: 200 points for the quiz grade, 150 points for the Maple assignments, 125 points for each of the three 50-minute exams, and 275 points for the Final Exam. Your final grade will be determined from these 1000 points as follows:

900-1000 (at least  90%): A

860-899  (at least  86%): B+

800-859  (at least  80%): B

760-799  (at least  76%): C+

700-759  (at least  70%): C

660-699  (at least  66%): D+

600-659  (at least  60%): D

000-599  (less than 60%): F
